Dear Ms. Lunelle,
One of my dearest friends, Past Commander-in-Chief of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Honorable Charles Kelly Barrow wrote two books about the “forgotten Confederate” which highlighted the Black Confederate soldier and the heroic and honorable role that he played alongside his Red, Yellow, Brown and White brothers-in-arms in the War For Southern Independence.
And not to forget his honorable Confederate family as well that the likes of John Brown found out about when he and his men crossed Harper's Ferry sneaking into the Slave Quarters and trying to influence the Slaves to kill their Masters and his family as they lay sleeping, not understanding that the Christian charity that the Southern White man had laid upon him with the teaching of God's words forbade such.
It mattered not if he was a cook who many a time foraged into enemy lines for game or to some Yankee farmhouse to relieve them of vittles to feed his messmates all the time with full knowledge that if he got caught, he would be killed.
Or, a ditch digger, digging a foxhole for the men to take cover. Or a Musician playing music to uplift the men's spirit.
Or like Levi Carnine of Louisiana, don in the Confederate soldiers uniform, making his way through enemy lines to take money and letters back home to the men's families.
Lest we forget the many times he would rush out into the field of battle to recover his Master's fallen body with bullets and cannonballs landing all around him with tearful eyes while mourning the death and taking the news and many a time the body back home. And sometimes picking up his Masters arms and taking his place within the ranks. Yes! A Confederate soldier!
And not to forget Nathan Bedford Forrest’s bodyguards, of whom he said “no finer Confederates ever fought”.
Also to be remembered and memorialized: the Black Confederate Veterans after the War....
Dr. Alexander Darnes, Aid de Camp of General Kirby Smith who became the first Black Doctor of Jacksonville, Florida, and who squashed a Yellow Fever and smallpox epidemic there.
Horace King, a master bridge builder who built bridges for the Confederate Army, and also designed and built the spiral staircase in the Capitol building in Montgomery, Alabama.
And just maybe when so-called Black History Month comes around one may learn about other famous Black Confederate soldiers like Holt Collier, Christopher Columbus Quarls, or Napoleon Nelson.
Yes, please Macon City Council, build in your City a Black Confederate Soldier Monument and give thanks to these men and arguably women, freed and indentured, who interposed their bodies and honorably served for land and people they loved.
And just maybe when so-called Black History Month comes around, just like John Brown, William T. Sherman and Thoreau people will learn about the Christian charity of the Southern White man who was the catalyst that led this Black Confederate soldier alongside him in honor.
And as Christmas approaches, I would ask Santa to get the Citizens of the City of Macon, Georgia whose Council proposed to build a Black Confederate Monument...."Support them and build it,” and just like Moses Ezekiel did with the so-called Reconciliation Cenotaph in Arlington; "integrate it!"
After all, the Confederate Armed Forces were the only integrated force in the whole of the War for Southern Independence. God bless you!
