Dear Ms. Lunelle,
This morning, Sunday, October 20, 2024, I would open up over 100 emails from across the South about a teenage boy seeking to remove Confederate flag imagery from the Montgomery, Alabama City flag. "Help"!
Jerimah Treece, a Senior at Booker T. Washington Magnet High School is wrong in his assessment of the Southern Cross and in my thinking, I believe that the Honorable Booker T. Washington would have told him so.
Here one sees a student talking the Yankee history that came into the South with the establishment of the Federal Public School System meant to divide White and Black students and further to discredit their ancestors from the real truth about their honorable Stand and the true meaning of the War for Southern Independence.
And no Poverty Pimp from the Southern Poverty Law Center, Riva Blu Maiglish, or Morris Dees, who they threw under the bus for his improprieties, can justify Treece's rhetoric.
Dr. Martin Luther King never once attacked this Christian symbol or the Southern Confederacy; only the hate conjured up by the Yankee rule during the 12-year period of Reconstruction in their modus operandi to divide our Southern family as Treece seeks to do.
22 years ago, don in the uniform of the Southern Soldier with the Southern Cross in hand, I stood on the Capitol Building steps in Montgomery and shortly afterwards, on the grounds of the Southern Poverty Law Center and on to Dr. King's Church with this message....."When faced with change they could not accept, the mighty men of valor, Red, Yellow, Brown, Black, White, Freed and Indentured.. brothers native to the Southern Soil, interposed their bodies and chose me, the Christian Cross of Saint Andrew, the first Disciple of Jesus Christ as their Symbol; ‘I Am Their Flag !’”
And I moved on to Selma crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge where a group of citizens alongside the National Press Corp, looking on, would applaud the journey I was making on the Historic March Across Dixie laying to rest the same kind of diluted false history that this boy Treece now brings forward; never telling of those Southern baby boys, 11,12,13.....whose lips still smelled from the kiss of their mothers lips as they went off to war as Flag Bearers with the Southern Cross in hand leading the Charge of the Southern Armies with the sound of the Rebel Yell.
Nor would Treece tell of the young Black baby girls don in their Southern Cross Majorette uniforms as they marched through the streets in the Decoration and Christmas Day Parades in Memorial to those brave men who gave their lives to the Southern Cause.
I would suggest that Treece and his followers avail themselves of a copy of the Historic March Across Dixie Photo Journal authored by Terry Lee Edgerton where they will see and read a truth that seems to never get told of the honor earned by the Southern Black man that so many try to keep hidden from folks like himself.
The loyal Blacks of the South deserve to be heard.
God bless you!
